What Is Sideloading? Everything You Need to Know

What Does "Sideloading" Mean?

Sideloading is the process of installing applications on your device from a source other than the official app store. Instead of downloading an app through the store's built-in marketplace, you transfer the installation file (often called an APK) directly to your device and install it manually.

Think of it like this: the official store is a curated supermarket, and sideloading is buying directly from the farmer. The product is the same — it just takes a different path to get to you.

Why Do People Sideload?

There are many legitimate reasons to sideload apps onto your VR headset:

  • Early Access: Developers often release beta versions of their apps outside the store before they go through the full review process.
  • Regional Availability: Some apps may not be available in your country's store yet, but the developer offers a direct download.
  • Custom Tools: Power users and developers create utilities, mods, and tools that aren't distributed through official channels.
  • App Lab & Indie Games: Many indie developers publish through alternative distribution platforms before (or instead of) the main store.

Is Sideloading Safe?

Sideloading itself is perfectly safe when done correctly. The key is to only install apps from sources you trust. Just like downloading software on a PC, you should verify the source before installing anything.

"Sideloading is a powerful tool for VR enthusiasts. It opens up a world of content beyond the official marketplace — just be smart about where you get your files." — VR Developer Community

Does Sideloading Void My Warranty?

No. Sideloading is an officially supported feature through Developer Mode. Enabling Developer Mode and installing apps from outside the store does not void your device warranty. However, installing malicious software that damages your device would not be covered.

What You'll Need

To get started with sideloading, you'll need:

  • A VR headset with Developer Mode enabled
  • A USB-C cable to connect to your computer
  • A sideloading tool (like SideQuest or our built-in installer)
  • The APK file of the app you want to install
