Common Sideloading Errors & How to Fix Them

Don't Panic — Most Errors Are Easy to Fix

Sideloading is straightforward, but things can occasionally go wrong. This guide covers the most common issues and how to resolve them quickly.

Error: "No Device Detected"

This is the most common issue. Your computer can't see your headset.

  • Fix 1: Try a different USB cable. Many cables are charge-only and don't support data transfer. Use the cable that came with your headset.
  • Fix 2: Check that Developer Mode is enabled (Settings → Device → Developer Mode).
  • Fix 3: Put on your headset and look for the "Allow USB Debugging" prompt. You must tap "Allow."
  • Fix 4: On Windows, you may need to install ADB drivers. Download them from the Android developer website.

Error: "INSTALL_FAILED_UPDATE_INCOMPATIBLE"

This happens when you try to install a newer version of an app that was signed with a different key.

  • Fix: Uninstall the existing version first, then install the new APK. Note: this will delete the app's data.

Error: "INSTALL_FAILED_OLDER_SDK"

The app requires a newer version of the operating system than what's on your device.

  • Fix: Update your headset firmware. Go to Settings → System → Software Update and check for updates.

Error: "INSTALL_PARSE_FAILED_NO_CERTIFICATES"

The APK file is corrupted or was not properly signed by the developer.

  • Fix: Re-download the APK from the original source. If the issue persists, contact the developer — the file may have been corrupted during upload.

Error: "Insufficient Storage Space"

Your headset doesn't have enough free space to install the app.

  • Fix: Free up space by deleting unused apps or media. Go to Settings → Storage to see what's taking up space.

Error: "App Not Installed" (Generic)

A catch-all error that can have multiple causes.

  • Fix 1: Make sure Developer Mode is still enabled — it can sometimes turn off after a firmware update.
  • Fix 2: Restart your headset and try again.
  • Fix 3: Check that the APK is compatible with your headset model.
"When in doubt, reboot. A surprising number of sideloading issues are resolved by simply restarting the headset." — VR Support Team
