Sideloading FAQ: Your Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Is sideloading legal?

A: Yes, sideloading is completely legal. It's simply installing software from a source other than the default app store. Many developers intentionally distribute their apps this way.

Q: Will sideloading void my warranty?

A: No. Enabling Developer Mode and sideloading apps does not void your warranty. Developer Mode is an officially supported feature.

Q: Can sideloaded apps give me viruses?

A: Just like on a PC, installing software from untrusted sources carries risk. Only download APKs from developers and platforms you trust. Stick to well-known sources like SideQuest, itch.io, or direct downloads from verified developers.

Q: Do sideloaded apps update automatically?

A: No. Unlike store apps, sideloaded apps do not receive automatic updates. You'll need to manually download and install the new version when updates are available. Some sideloading tools like SideQuest can notify you of updates.

Q: Can I sideload on any VR headset?

A: Most Android-based VR headsets support sideloading through Developer Mode. This includes Meta Quest 1, 2, 3, and Pro. Some headsets may have different procedures — check your manufacturer's documentation.

Q: Will sideloaded apps appear in my regular library?

A: No. Sideloaded apps appear under "Unknown Sources" in your app library. You need to change the filter from "All" to "Unknown Sources" to see them.

Q: Can I use sideloaded apps in multiplayer?

A: It depends on the app. If the multiplayer servers are independent of the store, then yes. However, some apps require a store-verified license for online features.

Q: How do I uninstall a sideloaded app?

A: You can uninstall sideloaded apps the same way as any other app — go to your library, find the app under "Unknown Sources," select it, and choose "Uninstall." You can also uninstall through SideQuest or ADB commands.

Q: Does sideloading use more battery?

A: No. The method of installation has no effect on battery usage. Battery consumption depends on the app itself, not how it was installed.

Q: Can I sideload without a computer?

A: In some cases, yes. Certain apps like Bugjaeger or Mobile VR Station allow you to sideload directly from an Android phone. However, the most reliable method is still using a computer with SideQuest.

Q: I enabled Developer Mode but it turned off after an update. Why?

A: Some firmware updates can reset Developer Mode. Simply re-enable it through your companion app (Settings → Device → Developer Mode). Your sideloaded apps should still be on the device.
